Excel English Class (EEC) is a free class that teaches and empowers non-English-speaking migrants with the basic English language for everyday usage.
EEC tackles the issue of language barriers among migrants by empowering parents with language skills for everyday living and preparing parents to read bedtime stories to their children.
EEC is a step towards better parenting, successful reintegration, personal development, securing and creating employment opportunities within the community.
Excel English Class (EEC) is an arm of the Children4WorldChildren (C4WC) project that aims to provide holistic solutions to families by empowering parents with language skills for everyday living. The project focused on tackling the issue of language barriers among the migrants.
In recent years, reflecting Ireland’s growing multi-ethnic population, the non-English speakers’ in our community are facing huge challenges to integrate smoothly into the Irish society and also struggling with the basic daily tasks such as shopping, visiting the doctor, helping children with homework, and attending children’s appointments. These and more could be daunting and could be extremely difficult for them to manage.
In most families, children are turned to interpreters for family issues, and these could lead to emotional crises for the young mind. The stress of serving as the constant translator accumulates and puts these young people at greater risk of anxiety and depression in adolescence and young adulthood, according to research.
To combat these issues and many more Parnell Parents Group was launched to combat loneliness, isolation, depression, and boredom among the young mothers in the neighbourhood. The project started in Parnell Estate, Mulhuddart in October 2009 by Wunmi Excel.
Hosted once a week and attended by young mothers from different nationalities, which include Nigeria, Poland, Turkey, Lithuania, Romania, Albania, Congo, Chad, Iraq, Iran, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Bosnia, and many more.
On setting up the group, we discovered a big barrier with communication as most of the group members were non-English speakers, this further translated into restructuring the project as a conversational club. In 2012, the project was officially merged under the C4WC social inclusion and empowerment project for the benefit of parents of young people from different ethnic groups across the globe.
